A defeat and two draws in their last three outings means they have been leapfrogged by Clasico rivals Barcelona at the summit.

Fortunately for Carlo Ancelotti, Madrid are facing one of the Spanish top flight’s most out-of-form sides, with Girona having lost four of their last five domestic matches.

The Catalan outfit, who were surprise Champions League qualifiers last term, have slumped to 11th as a result and will be fearing the worst ahead of their journey to the capital.
